Apologia da consciência

"There is much misunderstanding about faith. It is commonly supposed to be a leap in the dark, totally incompatible with reason. This is not so. True faith is never unreasonable, because its object is always trustworthy. When we human beings trust one another, the reasonableness of our trust depends on the relative trustworthiness of the people concerned. But the Bible bears witness to Jesus Christ as absolutely trustworthy. It tell us who he is and what he has done [...]."

Esta é uma passagem muito importante do nosso caro Stott. De facto, são inúmeras as ocasiões em que a fé é tida como irracional e cega. Mas como pode isto ser? Como nos podemos entregar a uma vida em Cristo, com uma mensagem tão radical e que afecta as nossas vidas de forma completa e profunda, sem ter um mínimo de discernimento, sem meditar sobre a Sua mensagem? Não o podemos. Claro que podemos seguir ensinamentos cegamente, mas essa não é uma vida completa, realmente feliz. Aliás, Jesus Cristo conversava com os seus discípulos, interagia, ao invés de simplesmente "mandar". Como tal, urge recorrer ao nosso espírito, à nossa consciência. E, ao fazê-lo, ao conhecer a Sua face na Bíblia, há algo em nós que desperta, que se mostra ao mundo dizendo que devemos confiar nascendo, assim, a Fé. Como poderia esta Fé estar em desacordo com a nossa consciência? Impossível.

"It seems to me that our greatest need today is an enlarged vision of Jesus Christ. We need to see him as the One in  whom alone the fulness of God dwells and in whom alone we can come to fulness of life (Col. 1:19; 2:9,10).

There is only one way to gain clear, true, fresh, lofty views of Christ, and that is through the Bible. The Bible is the prism by which the light of Jesus Christ is broken into its many and beautiful colours. The Bible is the portrait of Jesus Christ. We need to gazer  upon him with such intensity of desire that (by the gracious work of the Holy Spirit) he comes alive to us, meets with us, and fills us with himself."
